Due to expected heavy rainfall from Hurricane Dorian, the gates of the Tar River Reservoir Water Supply Dam will be partially lowered around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, September 4.
This reduction of the water level in the reservoir will hopefully minimize the potential impact of any increased flows along the Tar River to the hydraulic gates.
The downstream river at Hwy 97 is currently more than 17 feet below flood stage, so this release will not cause river to rise to flood level.
Lowering the gate will cause a temporary increase in river flow, which could affect people standing on rocks in the river or displace any tools or portable equipment located near the river shore.
Visit rockymountnc.gov and click the link at the bottom of the page to monitor river levels, or text “riverlevel” to 55469 to receive notification via your phone. For more information, please call 252-972-1336.
Our Rocky Mount Fire Department has a few safety reminders as we prepare for weather associated with Hurricane Dorian.
